The most-cited experiment is Lai & Good (2005), published in the Journal of Advanced Nursing. Researchers in Taiwan recruited 60 adults aged 60–83 who had difficulty sleeping and split them into two groups. For three weeks, one group listened to 45 minutes of slow, soothing music at bedtime; the other group got nothing. The music group reported significantly better sleep — longer duration, shorter time to fall asleep, fewer disturbances, less daytime grogginess — with a 26% overall improvement in the first week, and the gains grew each week, suggesting a cumulative effect. What "soothing music" actually meant
The details matter more than the headline. The music used in the study was 60–80 beats per minute, with no accented beats, no percussion, and no syncopation — styles included New Age, harp, piano, and slow orchestral pieces. In other words: the opposite of a playlist with lyrics, drops, or surprises. If your "sleep playlist" has sing-along choruses, the research isn't about that playlist. Tempo and texture did the work, not melody.
What later research added
Subsequent reviews and meta-analyses have generally supported the finding: listening to calming music at bedtime is associated with better self-reported sleep quality, particularly falling asleep faster and feeling more rested. But the honest caveats apply: most studies are small, many focus on older adults, and they measure perceived sleep quality through questionnaires rather than wiring people up in sleep labs. The evidence says music is a genuinely useful sleep aid — not a cure for sleep disorders. If you have persistent insomnia, that's a conversation for your doctor, not your playlist.
Why researchers think it works
No single mechanism is proven, but researchers have proposed a few plausible ones, and they fit together sensibly. Slow, predictable music may help slow breathing and heart rate toward rest — the original researchers noted physical changes consistent with relaxation, like lower heart and respiratory rates. It also masks the small disruptive noises (a creaking house, traffic) that keep light sleepers half-awake. And perhaps most importantly, it gives a busy mind something undemanding to rest on instead of the day's replay — reducing the pre-sleep rumination that keeps so many of us staring at the ceiling. None of this requires believing anything mystical about sound; it's distraction, masking, and ritual doing quiet work.
What this means for your bedtime playlist
The research translates into simple rules:
- Slow: around 60–80 beats per minute — roughly resting heart rate.
- Simple: no lyrics, no percussion, no sudden changes. Predictability is the point.
- Long: give it 30–45 minutes of wind-down, not one song. The study used 45 minutes nightly.

- Dark and quiet otherwise: music is an aid, not a substitute for the basics — cool room, no screens, regular bedtime.
One more practical note: keep the volume low — barely above a whisper. The goal is a sound you can surrender to, not one you actively listen to. A small speaker across the room beats earbuds in bed, which can become uncomfortable (and tangled) by morning. Set a sleep timer as a backstop, though with truly seamless ambient music, many people simply let it play.
